A natural language is any spoken or signed language that emerges organically within a human community, without conscious premeditation, and is subject to replication across generations, regional expansion or contraction, and gradual internal changes. The vast majority of languages in the world are natural languages, encompassing both standard dialects with high social prestige and nonstandard or vernacular dialects.

Meanwhile, Claude Shannon and Warren Weaver treated it as a mechanical process involving a source, encoder, channel, decoder, and receiver. Transactional and constitutive theorists push further, insisting that communication does not merely transmit pre-existing meaning but actively creates it, shaping how participants conceptualize their world and themselves. Each of these advances did not simply accelerate existing modes of exchange; they also gave rise to entirely new forms of communication. The exchange of data between computers stands as a particularly clear example of a communicative mode that had no predecessor in earlier eras.
